Let’s say you’re on the road with a group of colleagues and everyone has a laptop or tablet. Of course, everyone is dying to check their email or Facebook when they arrive at the hotel.
Let’s say that the wireless seems to have gone down. There is only ONE wired connection in the meeting room that you have for the week and no one knows when the wireless will come back up.
The good news is that it’s really not that big of a deal. All you need to do is plug your laptop into the one wired connection in the room and do one of two things:
A) Open up a command line prompt and type these two lines:
netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=”MakeUpAnSSID” key=”MakeUpAKey” keyUsage=persistent
netsh wlan start hostednetwork
B) Download Virtual Router from http://virtualrouter.codeplex.com/, install it, and run it. Fill in the SSID and Password, and then click Start Wireless Network.
Then you need to tell your colleagues what the SSID and password is for your new little network. They will have to pick your network from the list of available networks, punch in the password you just told them, and TA-DA! Everyone can now check their email, Facebook, and watch all those funny cat videos that have been uploaded in the last hour.
